Have I got a news flash for you! If you…

  • Love all things Barbie

  • Played with Barbies as a kid

  • Watched your kids play with the dolls

  • Collect Barbie items

  • Enjoy fashion

  • Enjoyed the recent Barbie movie

  • Or just like the color pink…:

You will LOVE the new exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum called “Barbie: A Cultural Icon.” I certainly did and I wasn’t so excited about playing with the dolls when I was a kid. But I did love the recent movie and its message so I visited the museum last Thursday to see what the exhibit was all about! I was NOT disappointed.

I enjoyed several things about the exhibit, but what I most enjoyed was seeing the evolution of “Barbie” throughout the years. There are numerous displays on the history and cultural impact of the doll, including the idea and creation, careers, fashion, accessories, and cultural relevance. There are even a few fabulous photo ops. Check out this one below!

The exhibit is near the back of the museum on the second floor in the Fashion-Design Mezzanine. The items are laid out historically and move from the front of the gallery to the back. This special exhibit is only available through July 2024.

Here are a few additional photos from the exhibit. I am not adding too many, as I want to encourage you to go and experience it yourself!

In addition, just before you enter the exhibit, there is another fashion exhibit entitled, “The Power of Pink” which is also fun to view.

You can view a couple of photos of “The Power of Pink” exhibit below.

Hot Tip! Save $$$! If you have a reciprocal membership at a ROAM museum, you and possibly a friend can get into the museum and the Barbie exhibit for free! Who doesn’t love that? Here’s a link to ROAM museums in the U.S. Be sure you have the correct type of membership (that includes reciprocal admittance) before you go. As of today, the website lists Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha (Must have a Contributing Membership or above) and the Des Moines Art Museum (Ambassador Membership or above), as well as many others in the United States and Canada. I plan to use the heck out of my pass this year!
