Take an Art Break in Omaha - Visit Kaneko!
While I had hoped to get to Kaneko on Sunday, it wasn’t in the cards. But I’d highly recommend for you to go during one of the next two weekends! The featured exhibition is a range of works by Linda Fleming (until February 11) and her work is fabulous! You can also see one of her sculptures in the newly-redesigned Gene Leahy Mall (large urban park) in the Old Market in Omaha. Check out the Kaneko website and photo below.

What is Kaneko, you ask? It’s a creative space composed of three former turn-of-the-century warehouses in Omaha’s Old Market at 11th and Jones. Kaneko was started in 1998 by Jun Kaneko and his wife Ree. Jun Kaneko is a world-famous artist from Omaha. You can see his work at the Omaha Zoo in the small rest area near the Stingray building. You can also see his work in front of the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, at Lauritzen Gardens, and at the new downtown Riverfront Park in Omaha. I’ve seen his work numerous other places, including a month ago in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The buildings themselves that comprise Kaneko used to house a well-known creamery and then an auutobile dealer until the Kanekos purchased it in 1998. The remodeling process was quite an undertaking and is fun to read about by itself. Click below for Kaneko’s history.
Gallery hours are currently as follows:
Thursday – Saturday 1—7 pm
Sunday 1—6 pm
As a bonus here are two photos of some of Jun Kaneko’s work. I didn’t know his work was so famous and that he is from Omaha until recently. You don’t know what you don’t know, I guess! 🤷♀️
