Toss-Up Tuesday: My New Favorite Podcast - Atlas Obscura!

I have always enjoyed a good story. When I travel, I like to listen to podcasts and audiobooks. They seem to help driving long distances fly by. I have several travel podcasts I enjoy, but I found a new (to me) podcast this week that may top them all.

The podcast is called Atlas Obscura and according to their website, it is “a short, daily celebration of the world's strange and wondrous places.” The daily segments are short, quirky, and fun.

The segment I chose to listen to was called “The Library of Congress Hair Collection.” I mostly chose this collection because I had just posted about The Library of Congress and the “hair collection” cinched my selection. What a strange library collection! I can’t imagine having to organize and assemble a collection such as this. But the librarian interviewed by the podcast host does a great job of explaining why people historically have collected people’s hair. I’ve always wondered why you can sometimes find hair decorations in museums and antique malls. But the way it’s explained in the podcast answered my question. It makes perfect sense now, even though that’s something we generally don’t practice too much of today.

If that topic is of no interest, some there’s include:

  • Travel Ups and Downs (on my future list)

  • Aurora Alien Gravesite

  • Micropia (museum dedicated to microscopic organisms)

  • The Goiter Belt

Most episodes I’ve scrolled through last from 9-16 minutes - the perfect amount of time to listen to while running errands, waiting for an appointment, driving to work, or on a road trip of about any length. For more information on the Atlas Obscura podcast, click below.

You can find Atlas Obscura episodes on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify. There are also several best-selling books published under the title of Atlas Obscura if you would prefer to read about weird and wonderful places rather than listen to of vast episodes.
