Kansas City is a Holiday-Lover’s Delight!

I took a few days last week and breezed down south to Kansas City to primarily do two things. First I reconnected with my first college roommate (as a result of this blog - YAY!) and I also wanted to check out a few holiday events. I love Kansas City and was pleased I was able to do both!

KC is a great holiday destination with more holiday events to offer than you could possibly do in a month. Here are a few holiday attractions I enjoyed and highly recommend.

Union Station - In my mind, there’s no better bang for your holiday buck than KC Union Station. There is so much to do under one roof, you could probably spend a whole weekend get-away there, especially during the holidays. My absolute favorite attraction is the indoor Holiday Reflections that you can walk through. I was there both last year and this year and it seems they have really upped their game. In addition to great miniature train displays, interactive displays and beautiful lights, they have a dancing fountain as part of the event. The other new thing this year is that they have covered up all the windows so you will get the same fabulous experience regardless of what time you are there. Hint: My friend and I went on a Tuesday early afternoon and we almost had the place to ourselves. Heavenly! It is my absolute favorite holiday event in KC. Important tips: Be sure to purchase tickets as far as possible in advance, particularly on weekends. Make sure you have your phone battery charged. Lots of photo ops to be had!

Union Station also has a large temporary exhibit for the LEGO fans in your family. It’s called Bricktionary. I did not check it out but I haven’t seen a LEGO exhibit that hasn’t been anything but fantastic. And I’ve been to a bunch of them!

Science City (science museum) is another year-round favorite in Union Station. There are a number of interactive exhibits and activities for all ages. Plus they have a wonderful gift shop if you need a few more gifts for any science fans you know.

Other Union Station favorites include the largest indoor decorated holiday tree (gorgeous), large screen movies, holiday planetarium shows (We went to one called Stars of Faith and really enjoyed it and learned some things), an escape room and live theater shows. Mini train rides are available for the little ones and there are several good restaurants and a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. And, although we didn’t have time to check it out, there is also a Museum of Illusions in the building which also has some great photo ops.

My last tip: Reserve your attraction/event tickets and make restaurant reservations ahead of time, especially for evenings, weekends, and the last 2 weeks in December. After all, nobody wants to show up with several excited family members or friends and discover tickets are sold out. 😬

My next blog article will feature other attractions nearby Union Station, including the many attractions at Crown Center area and the World War I Museum. All are fantastic!!!

The fountain is synchronized to holiday music! Park benches are available to enjoy the show.
