A Visit to Oklahoma City’s First Americans Museum
Did you know November is Native American Heritage Month? In honor of that distinction, I’m writing about a wonderful and informative museum in Oklahoma City called the First Americans Museum. Oklahoma City is beautiful and well worth a trip and the First Americans Museum is a “must visit” attraction while you are there!

The first thing that will strike you as you drive up to the new building is both the building design and how it beautifully blends with its location. The museum complex is built in a circle with artwork honoring beliefs in the center. To me, it was evocative of a gathering of people around a fire to celebrate and pass on traditions. The stage was set right away. I knew I was in for something special.
The museum tells the story of Native American people in Oklahoma and the broader history of Native Americans in the U.S. in general. The exhibits are thoughtful and educational. I have personally read a number of books regarding Native American history, but I still learned much I did not know.
As all great museums do, the exhibits both celebrate their enduring cultures and point out the stark reality of history from the voices of those who lived it. You, the visitor, are left with a sense of having been there at each point in history. Photographs, text, video, audio, artwork, and artifacts tell the unique stories.
In that vein, I will also share my museum experience through my photos below. It is a beautiful, informative place that is well worth your time.
